Medicare Annual Wellness Visit Q & A

What is the Medicare annual wellness visit?

The Medicare annual wellness visit is health screening that focuses on disease prevention. You create or update your personalized preventive health care plan during this visit.

The Medicare annual wellness visit has many of the same elements as an annual physical exam. However, your provider doesn’t do a full head-to-toe physical. Instead, they focus on identifying habits and health problems that can later lead to health problems.

Your provider then works with you, creating a plan that prevents future health problems.

Am I a candidate for the Medicare annual wellness visit?

You’re a candidate for the Medicare annual wellness visit if you have Medicare Part B medical insurance and it’s been more than 12 months since your Welcome to Medicare preventive visit. Or 12 or more months since you started Medicare Part B.

This annual wellness visit is free and available to you every 12 months.

What happens during the Medicare annual wellness visit?

Before you meet with your provider at United Physician Group for your Medicare annual wellness visit, you complete the Health Risk Assessment (HRA) questionnaire. The answers to these questions help your provider create your personalized wellness plan.

Your provider will check your height, weight, and blood pressure. They’ll review your medical and family histories and ask for a list of all your health care providers and the medications you take.

The United Physician Group’s family medicine practitioners also complete a cognitive assessment during your Medicare annual wellness visit, looking for signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. They also screen for depression.

After they complete their exam, you and your health care provider work on your personalized health prevention plan. Your provider also gives you health advice and referrals for additional testing and services.

There’s no physical exam during this wellness visit.

What happens after the Medicare annual wellness visit?

What happens after your Medicare annual wellness visit depends on your personal prevention plan.

Any additional exams, treatments, or tests recommended by your provider in your plan might not be covered by your Medicare Part B medical insurance, this includes physical exams and vaccinations (immunizations).

However, if your screening indicates signs of depression or dementia, Medicare will pay for a second visit for a cognitive evaluation.
